The Tatting Shuttle

Small Stone

While sorting through my craft basket I found a red plastic tatting shuttle.  Way back when I taught a tatting class.  I walked into the room with all the silver-haired ladies and introduced myself.  I have to smile when I remember the looks on their faces.  After all, who expects a 20 something year old to be teaching a tatting class?
Now if I walked into a room to teach tatting, no one would blink an eye!

Stereo-typing, we all tend to do it, even if we don’t want to.  You take a class to have someone teach you an ancient form of lace making, one that is dying out because young people aren’t learning it, and it’s a young woman teaching it.  Where’s that grandmotherly, kind, and sweet woman you expected?
I wasn’t upset by their reaction, I was amused.  The ladies laughed a bit about it then settled down to wind their thread around their shuttle.  It was a fun class.  They learned about tatted lace and I was able to listen to stories.  I learned about family, about loss, about laughter, and resilience.  These ladies were strong, no matter what life handed them they could regroup and recover.  I learned respect.
Thank you Goddess that, no matter what our age, we have the ability to be able to draw from what ever aspect of you we need.  We can be playful and adventurous. We can be nurturing and fertile (in ways other than child-bearing).  We can be introspective and wise.  We can do all these things at any age.
Yes, She is all.............

Small Stone:

The orange-ish glow of the light diffusing through the salt lamp gives the room a warm cozy feel.  There are fewer boxes now and more furniture.  Familiar books have been set on the bookshelves but there are still empty spaces in the room waiting to be filled.  Three weeks ago this was the new house I bought….tonight it’s my new home.

I spent most of the day unpacking boxes and organizing books, beading supplies, sewing fabrics and threads, craft stuff and “craft” stuff in the room I call “my studio.”  Some boxes will stay unopened until I have my project table.  Other boxes will reside in the closet until I decide where my sacred space will be.  Yet today I did unwrap some of my Goddess statues, my mortar and pestle and my salt lamp.  It has been a long journey getting here and I know She has been traveling with me.  So I light some lavender incense and take a few moments to be silent, to be grateful, and to be humble.

Blessed Be!

I Resolve

January 1, 2014
Small Stone:

I RESOLVE:
            to live in the moment……
That’s it…..
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
            Like just about everyone else I can say that 2013 brought changes; some expected, some unexpected; some sad, some joyous; some memorable and some I’d just as soon forget.
            Last year I participated in the Writing Our Way Home Mindful Writing Challenge (and I will be doing so again).  Yes, being mindful and living in the ‘now’ takes practice, focus and being able to recognize when you’re obsessing about the past or worrying about tomorrow’s appointments.
            During the Yule season I picked up a book called Living in the Moment by Anna Black.  Hmmm.. mindful meditations, mindful eating, seeing, touching, a book that reminds me that there is never just one way to do something (and instructions are for guidance only). Somebody is trying to tell me something!
            So that’s my resolution, live in the moment.  If I can work on just “being” in the present I could enhance my meditation (okay, okay, I could concentrate on my breathing for more that 3 minutes at a time), lower stress (a biggie for me), and just be content being me (and not get sucked into others’ drama).
            Tonight, the first night of this new year (and also a new moon), I’ll light a candle and just be.
